Before training as a clinical counsellor/therapist, I lectured in computing and Information technology in Merseyside and Manchester for over 15 years. I gained counselling experience in this role as one of my duties was to counsel students. I subsequently qualified with a Masters in clinical counselling in 2011. I worked in a charity organisation in Accrington, Lancashire for four years before deciding to set up my private practice in Southport. I have a special interest in addiction and compulsive thinking/behaviour having researched this area as part of my Masters qualification. I have experience dealing with addictions, OCD, anxiety, eating disorders and depression. I am a person centred counsellor and I tailor my approach to adapt to the needs of each client and offer what will be most helpful to them. I work on the principle that the most significant aspect of counselling is to establish a working relationship with a client that is based on confidentiality, trust and safety.

Approach to treatment

Deciding to begin therapy or counselling can be difficult and it takes courage to make the first step, getting in touch. I work on the belief that a person has most of the answers, most of the time. However there are times when it's hard to see things clearly and someone else is needed to help bring clarity and understanding so that the way forward becomes clear. My approach in therapy begins by building trust and rapport that will underpin the therapeutic relationship and exploration of the issue or problem. The nature of the issue will determine the strategy and direction of therapy. My approach is mainly Person-centred with additional training in Control Therapy, CBT and TA.Fundamental to my work is a belief that unexpressed emotions and unmet needs lead to unhealthy behaviours with manifestations such as anxiety, depression, stress, addictions, relationship difficulties and an inability to cope with some aspect of life. By identifying the root causes I aim to help a person find choices and alternative healthier ways. I do this using a holistic perspective covering all aspects of the person - cognitive, emotional and physical.
